Ramadan is almost here! While it is primarily a time for spiritual reflection and increased devotion, the physical effects of fasting for over 12 hours can sometimes show on our skin. Overeating, changes in sleep routine, dehydration – all these have visible impacts. With Ramadan skincare doesn’t have to be difficult. A little planning and some key tips can leave you looking radiant throughout the holy month!

Hydration – Your Number One Priority

Be sure to hydrate at suhoor and iftar by drinking plenty of plain water, fresh juices, smoothies, coconut water, etc. At least 8-10 glasses are recommended daily. Fruits and veggies also boost hydration levels so stock up on water-rich produce like cucumber, melon, oranges, grapefruit, and lettuce.

Another easy way to provide moisture –

applying toner in skincare routine Use a hydrating toner after cleansing. Spritzing your face lightly throughout the day combats dryness caused by hot weather or air conditioning. Hyaluronic acid serums are fantastic too. For an extra moisture boost, apply your regular moisturizer and let it fully absorb. Then use a facial oil like rosehip oil before makeup application. The oil creates a protective seal preventing moisture loss.

Don’t Skimp on Cleansing

Stress, hormones, sweat, and sebum production all increase skin oiliness. To prevent premature aging always remove dirt, impurities, and makeup gently but thoroughly each night. Using your fingers and a non-foaming gel cleanser is perfect.

Twice a week, exfoliate very gently with a muslin cloth, konjac sponge, or a scrub containing round jojoba beads. Avoid walnut shell and apricot scrubs as they create micro-tears on the skin’s surface.

Soothing Care for Sensitive Skin

Skin sensitivity increases while fasting due to inflammation and a weakened moisture barrier. Certain ingredients also become photosensitizing when skin is dehydrated i.e. they react with sunlight causing irritation, redness, and hyperpigmentation.

Stick to a gentle sulphate-free cleanser without fragrance or essential oils. Hypoallergenic natural moisturizers work best. Always check the ingredients list when buying skincare items. Soothing botanical extracts like aloe, green tea, chamomile, and turmeric fight inflammation. Colloidal oatmeal calms minor skin issues like itching or eczema flare-ups.

Most importantly – avoid using irritating products like retinol, benzoyl peroxide, or harsh masks/peels while fasting. They can easily disrupt your skin’s protective barrier. Of course, always wear a broad spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen too! Reapply every 2 hours if outdoors.

Protect with Sunscreen

Sun exposure can wreak havoc on your skin and cause issues like dark spots, fine lines, and hyperpigmentation. Incidental sun exposure also goes up during Ramadan as we head out for evening prayers and festivities. Apply a broad spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen under your makeup daily. Reapply if you will be outdoors for extended periods.

Get Your Beauty Sleep

Insufficient sleep and late nights can lead to dark eye circles, puffiness, and premature fine lines over time. Sleep has a pivotal role in skin cell regeneration and turnover. During Ramadan, it’s extra essential we wind down early after a long day of fasting. Clocking in 7-9 hours allows hormones to balance out, eliminating feelings of stress. Don’t skimp on your beauty sleep if you want a flawless complexion!

Skincare during Ramadan does not need to be complicated at all. Stick to nourishing ingredients your skin loves while avoiding anything too harsh or irritating. Remember that less is more when it comes to products. You really need just four items – a gentle cleanser, a hydrating toner, a moisturizer with SPF, and a facial oil. Streamline your regimen so it aligns seamlessly with Ramadan rituals.

Hope these tips help you stay confident and radiant as you welcome the glorious month. Let your inner light shine through with healthy, glowing skin using these fundamental but powerful skincare techniques. Ramadan Kareem!
